Fighting coughs and colds at Ōtaki School...

In Kono we have been learning how to keep ourselves and others Safe. When we are sick we need to stay at home until we are better. We have talked about what to do if we have a cough or cold. Kono worked on creating a book together about how we cough and sneeze into our elbows. Why we wash or sanitise our hands, and how we go about this.
We also do an experiment together to show how effective soap is against germs...

Kindy Connection

We are so lucky to have Ōtaki Kindergarten over our back fence. For those tamariki who will make the transition to Ōtaki School, there is ample opportunity to build relationships between the kaimahi of the school and the tamariki before they become a school student. Not only do we have many chats through the fence, but the Kindergarten visits at least three times a term. They come to Kono to meet the kaimahi there, as well as get a feel for the physical environment of the classroom. It is an opportunity for past students to see some of their old friends also and welcome them into the class. Tuakana, teina relationships in action. Thanks for your visit this week Ōtaki Kindy! Pai rawa ki te kite i a koutou!

Pool Party!

To celebrate the end of our swimming lessons the teina classes of Ngā Kete had a pool party. Because we are so lucky to have a school pool, we have been able to take tamariki swimming every day. Having lessons five days a week, it takes no time to see an improvement in their swimming skills. So important when we spend so much time at the river and the sea! On Friday afternoon Tama-nui-te-rā came to the party too and we had the hottest day of the week! It was great to get together with Waikawa and Konae to celebrate the end of our swimming season. Finishing off with an iceblock and a play in the park. He mahi nui tēnei - tēnā koe Matua!

Kono leads Karakia

Every week a different class leads karakia for the whānau. This week It was Kono's turn. We have been practising in class how to deliver our mihimihi. Even with all our practise, it's no mean feat to stand in front of the whānau to tuku mihi. He mihi tēnei ki ngā tamariki i tū i tēnei wiki!

Māui in the making...

In Kono we have been preparing for our part in the whakaari all term. Learning the kōrero about Te Ika  a Māui, how Māui fished up the North...
